The headline says it all—at Hudl, we’re powered about our people. Take the product team for example. In this part of the company, we work in tight-knit teams called squads. And these squads include a lot of people: you have developers, QAs, product managers, designers and Scrum masters. All these roles play a huge part in reaching our goals—all of them are important.

“Each squad has a lot of agency and autonomy,” said Troy Edmison, QA Manager. “In every meeting your voice matters.”

Keep reading to hear all about his experience with the Hudl product team, and learn more about the quality assurance (QA) side of things.

At the end of the day, I’m a Hudlie at heart.

Journey to QA Manager

So what is quality assurance anyway? It’s exactly what it sounds like: a role dedicated to assuring the quality of the user experience.

And what’s the best way to ensure your user has a good experience? Get to know what the user expects. Exactly what Edmison did during his years in Hudl’s customer support department. Starting there gave him a foundation for knowing the impact Hudl can have on our customers, and how he could improve it.

Hudl’s apprenticeship program came just in time for him to explore that growing interest in quality assurance.

“I got the opportunity to do a quality assurance apprenticeship, and after that got hired on full time,” said Edmison. “So over the years, Hudl has really helped me grow into a senior role, and then most recently a QA Manager role.”

And Edmison has never looked back. Well, except for that one time.

“I took a chance at another opportunity with another company. But at the end of the day, I’m a Hudlie at heart. And I really missed the awesome people here and the problems we solve as a team, and also how we got to solve them.”

Solving those user problems is a huge motivation for Edmison.

“What excites me most about coming to work every day is solving the problems for our customers, whether it’s being able to make a coach’s workflow more efficient, [...] or it’s helping an athlete get recruited,” said Edmison.

One of the most rewarding things is being able to see a product in a user’s hands and how it impacts their lives after you’ve spent months and months building it.

That doesn’t mean he’s done learning though. In fact, that’s his main piece of advice: never stop learning. Always be open to new technologies. New experiences don’t hurt either, which is why his favorite benefit at Hudl is the sabbatical policy (every five years, employees get a set amount of money and days off to use on a vacation).

“Hiking the American west is something that I always wanted to do,” said Edmison. “So I spent two weeks traveling state to state, through car and plane and train, to hike all the hikes that I wanted to, in the deserts and the mountains.”

Hiking the mountains of the world would be just fine with Troy Edmison.

Edmison’s enthusiasm for new experiences goes hand in hand with his excitement for his role and the impact it can have—and has had. Passionate people like Edmison are what powers Hudl as a company, which is exactly why we want to shine a spotlight on them.
